KINGMAN — Great Bend baseball coach Roger Ward liked the Bat Cats' chances with Kyler Horsman and Christian Ammann batting with the Jayhawk Collegiate baseball game on the line.

Kingman pitcher Mason Munz won the battle by striking out Horsman and Ammann with the bases loaded to preserve a wild 5-4 Islander victory Friday.

The Bat Cats (4-1) were rolling, up 4-0 after five innings. But Kingman (4-1) turned two errors and a wild pitch into two unearned runs that was the difference in the ballgame.

Ammann scored on Kyle Walker's second-inning groundball for a 1-0 lead. Horsman's 2-run homer scored Cooper Smith after a third-inning walk for a 3-0 lead. Ammann singled home Smith for a 4-0 lead after 41/2 innings.

Bat Cats starter D.J. Cavazos yielded two earned runs in six innings. Kingman's Nolan Freund scored on Luke Clayton's single. Ben Waliczek scored on Jhett Creel's error. Clayton scored on Kyle Reece's sixth-inning double to slice Great Bend's lead to 4-3.

Kingman's Gavin Djurovic scored when first baseman Cooper Smith and second baseman Kade Goeke were unable to record a seventh-inning forceout. Waliczek scored the eventual game-winning run when catcher Ian George was unable to prevent a pitch from getting to the backstop from pitcher Carson Bougher (0-1).

Munz left the ninth-inning door open when he walked Goeke, Jesse Ponce and Smith. But Munz struck out Horsman on a 2-2 count and Ammann on a called 3-2 strikeout to end the ballgame.

Great Bend travels to NBC World Series champion Hutchinson Sunday. The Monarchs travel to Great Bend Monday.
