Barton Community College’s men’s basketball team had a modest 19-14 lead with eight minutes remaining before halftime Friday night against Quakerdale Prep.
Kevin Barber’s 3-pointer lit the fuse on a string of Barton points, a 20-5 run that stretched the Cougars’ lead to 39-19. In such a surge, there’s always a defining play or two that highlight it.
Barton jumping jack Dwayne Brunson obliged.
A 6-foot-7 freshman from Queens, N.Y., Brunson busted out a pair of NYC schoolyard follow-slam dunks to light up Kirkman Athletic Center. Brunson’s jaw-dropping jams off teammates’ misses during the final 2:45 of the half put an early exclamation point on an 86-54 victory.
Brunson says it’s a reactionary thing that he’s done “numerous” times, something he used to do in playground pickup games in the inner city.
“I can pretty much pick up the spot on the backboard where the ball is coming off,” Brunson said of his timing on getting the aforementioned dunks. “It is something I used to do all of the time on the playgrounds.”
BCC freshman forward Chris Catino had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds, and Carl Wallace, a freshman forward, scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half, when the Cougars bolted to a 39-19 halftime lead.
Sophomore swingman Colin Beatty had nine points and a team-high five assists for the Cougars, who continually built on their lead against the athletic prep school.

In Friday’s nightcap, Coffeyville was able to hold off the cold-shooting Cougars down the stretch in the first test of the season for Barton.
The biggest eyesore was shooting 3-pointers, where Barton struggled throughout, missing 15 of 16 from long distance.
“You can’t shoot six percent from the three-point line and rely on the 3 and expect to win games,” Ferguson said. “We thought we were a pretty good shooting team, and they did some things that bothered us.
“Coffeyille is really athletic and quicker than us and they’re really athletic and challenged our shots. They didn’t double us and we had a chance to knock down some shots, but we didn’t put ourselves in a position to do that.”
The Cougars shot only 9-for-39 in the first half (23.1 percent), including 0-for-7 on 3s.
Coffeyville led 40-23 at halftime before Barton had a furious comeback bid in the second half come up shy.
Dionne Harris led the Cougars with 18 points and had seven rebounds. Netanya Jackson added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
