Just a couple weeks out from the Region VI Championships, the Barton men’s cross country team had a good preview of the teams they will be seeing at the event.
Barton finished 12th at the Fort Hays State Tiger Open held at the Sand Plum Nature Trail in nearby Victoria. The meet featured several region schools the Cougars will see in Hutchinson on Oct. 29.
Allen County won the meet with 60 points followed by Cowley College with 136. Trinidad State (Colo) was third with a 136 as well but lost on the tiebreaker.
Barton finished with 320 points, 7th among the 10 region schools posting a team total in the Black race. The Black race was comprised of 2-year schools as well as some NAIA schools in the area.
Leading the way for Barton was Olathe freshman Sam Hengeli. Hengeli has paced the Cougars in every meet this season, taking 25th at the Tiger Open. Hengeli ran a 26:32.5 to earn the Top 25 placing.
Ignacio Calderon, a freshman form Dodge City, also turned in a good race, taking 68th in the field of nearly 200 runners with a 27:43.3.
A pair of Barton runners finished just outside 100 as Corban Ogle and Felix Marquez took 101st and 116th. Ogle, a freshman from Texas, ran a 28:25.5 to finish 101st while Dodge City freshman Marquez ran 28:50.0.
