COLBY — The Barton Community College men’s basketball team responded to an early 8-2 deficit with a fast-paced offense and strong defense to take a 52-26 lead at halftime and win 88-65.
Barton, which is ranked No. 10 in the latest NJCAA Division-I poll, ran the Trojans into the ground with a massive 50-18 first-half run from a team that loves to run.
“We ended up with outscoring them 50-18 to end that first half, and that was pretty impressive,” Barton head coach Craig Fletchall said. “That was probably the best I’d had a team play here. It’s a tough place to play.
“We had 18 points off of turnovers and Colby had none. That was the big difference in that first half.”
Sophmore forward Dwayne Brunson led Barton with 23 points, including 13 in the first half, in his second straight strong game after serving a two-game suspension.
“That’s the second game in a row that he has come in strong off the bench for us,” Fletchall said. “He has been very productive for us, and he has had a great attitude. I think he’s enjoying winning.”
Freshman guard Algie Key finished with a double-double, scoring 14 points and recording 11 assists.
Darius Hill finished the game with 14 points, and Carl Wallace led the Cougars with 10 rebounds.
Colby falls to 17-4 overall, 5-2 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division. Barton improves to 18-2, 4-2. It still sits in third place in the West, still one-half game behind Colby.
