Cougars' Onugha sparks comeback victory

COLBY -- Every game Barton Cougar Vivian Onugha plays is a memorable experience. Onugha highlighted a 19-point, 23-rebound game with eight points in overtime for a 54-49 comeback Jayhawk Conference basketball victory over Colby. 

Onugha forced overtime with a steal and tying basket off a rebound for a 44-44 tie after teammate Regina Donanu converted a 3-point play. Onugha's free throw for the lead missed.

Ellinwood's Brittany Simpson preserved a 3-point lead (52-49) by blocking a 3-point attempt by Colby's Sophie Bennett. Simpson converted two free throws for a 5-point victory. Colby Trojan Kylee Hahn from Hoisington also missed a tying 3-pointer. 

The Cougars (7-9, 3-7 Jayhawk) rallied from a 13-point deficit. Donanu scored 15 points.

Colby's Ishante Suttington scored 16 points.

Shooting 13% and facing a 25-12 halftime deficit, Barton turned up the defense to shut out the Trojans 12-0 in the third quarter for a 25-24 score.

Barton's first road win of the season improves to 3-7 in league play and 7-9 overall while Colby slips to 5-6 in KJCCC and 10-7 on the season.

Next up is a two-game homestand beginning on Wednesday hosting Independence Community College followed by Saturday's contest against Coffeyville Community College. Tip off time slated for 5:30 p.m. for each with the men's matchups to follow.

Onugha's 13th double-double of the season was compiled on a game high 19 points and 23 rebounds, 11 rebounds on the offensive end in following her program record 26 rebounds last time on the court to eclipse 20-plus boards for the sixth time of the season.

Donanu poured in 13 of her 15 points after halftime. The Cougars controlled the boards, collecting 17 offensive rebounds and finishing with a plus-12 edge on the glass while committing 16 turnovers in matching its season best
