Cougars stay atop Jayhawk after big road win at Coffeyville

COFFEYVILLE – Coffeyville and Barton have had some battles over the years in men’s basketball.
Nellis Hall has been the site of some of those battles, especially back in the Jayhawk Shoot Out days. But it has been 10 years since Barton won in Coffeyville.
Wednesday night it was a Jayhawk Conference regular season game – and to keep at least a share of the Jayhawk lead – for the No. 21 ranked Cougars.
Barton, after the nearly four hour bus trip, was up to the challenge.
The Cougars trailed only 2-0 in the contest as they earned a huge Jayhawk Conference road win. Barton defeated Coffeyville, 65-57.
The Cougars are now 10-2 in the conference. No. 8 Hutchinson (10-2) defeated Independence 76-74 Wednesday night. Barton is 14-2 overall. Coffeyville drops to 8-4 and 12-4 overall.
The Cougars led by as many as 15 before holding off a furious Red Raven rally to secure the road win.
Coffeyville led 2-0 before Noah Webster scored the Cougars’ first five points to give Barton a 5-2 lead. The Cougars would never trail again.
The game was tied a 9-all, 11-all and 13-all. Neither team had a two-possession lead until Keshon Montague hit a 17-foot jumper to give Barton a 17-13 lead with 11 minutes to play in the half. That got the Cougars going.
Webster pushed that lead to 20-14 on his second trey at the midway point of the first half.
The lead grew to eight when Montague hit a layup to give Barton a 26-18 lead with 6:45 left in the half.
Marvin Cannon gave the Cougars a 30-21 lead with 3:49 to play on an assist from Montague and the ensuing free throw after being fouled on the layup.
The Cougars took their first double figure lead on another Cannon layup down the middle of the lane for a 32-21 lead with three minutes to play in the half.
The lead reached 12 after a 20-8 Barton run and the Cougars went to half up 33-25.
A key moment early in the second half saw Barton block two Coffeyville shots that resulted in a layup by Elijah Ford to give Barton a 10-point lead once again at 37-27 with 16:30 to play in the game.
A few minutes later, Coffeyville had four chances on the offensive end but failed to score. On the ensuing possession, Webster drained a 3-pointer to make it 45-32 with 12:40 to play.
At the media timeout, Barton was still very much in control of things, leading 54-39 with 8:55 left in the game.
Coffeyville would make a run. Seven straight by the Red Ravens cut the lead to 54-46, forcing Coach Fletchall to call a timeout with 7:31 to play.
The crowd got going as Coffeyville got the lead to 55-49 before Webster drilled another trey to make it 58-49 at the 5:45 mark.
From there, it was a matter of trying to hang on for Barton. The Red Ravens got it to 58-55 with still 2:30 left.
Coffeyville trimmed the lead 58-57 on a Casey Benton layup with two minutes to play.
That is when Montague came up big. The sophomore point guard knocked down a 25-footer from the right wing to end an 18-4 Red Raven run and give Barton some breathing room, up 61-57 with 1:39 left.
Coffeyville’s TJ Washington had a 3-pointer rim out with 31 seconds left, giving Barton a chance to close out the game at the free throw line.
Webster converted five 3-pointers to lead Barton with 21 points. The sophomore grabbed eight rebounds. Montague added 16 and Ford 10. Marvin Cannon had a big game with seven points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots. Barton had 11 blocks.
Benton led Coffeyville with 19.
Barton will return to the Barton Gym Saturday against Neosho County (3-9, 5-10). Saturday marks the halfway mark through the Jayhawk. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
