Barton Community College sophomore Casey Friesen had the final touches put on a good career with a selection to the Jayhawk West All-Conference second team. The sophomore setter from Texas was the lone Cougar to be honored.
Friesen was one of just three Cougars to play in every set this season for the Cougars and led the team in assists with more than five per match. She ended the season with 659 assists in the 130 sets the Cougars played during the season.
“Casey was a true warrior this season,” Barton coach Phil Shoemaker said. “Unfortunately, she began the season with an injured shoulder (which will likely require surgery soon), but she never took a day, or a game off.”
“There’s no question that it limited her abilities to some extent, but her leadership and IQ were needed, and she gave us everything she possibly could.”
Friesen was also among the team leaders in services aces (2nd) with 21, digs (3rd) with 282, and did not commit an error in serve receiving the entire season.
“I know that once Casey can get her shoulder repaired, and has a chance to rehab, she will make a great contribution to a team at the next level.” Coach Shoemaker said.
West champion Hutchinson led the conference with three first team picks including Player of the Year Nicole Kisner. Patrick Hall of Hutchinson was tabbed the Coach of the Year.
