Great Bend pitchers Kyler Horsman and Tyler Stuhlsatz combined for a 5-hit shutout in a 10-0 Jayhawk Collegiate baseball victory over the Kingman Islanders Thursday. Horsman and Stuhlsatz worked around four Bat Cat errors at Al Burns Memorial Field.
Stuhlsatz preserved a shutout by tagging out Kingman’s Corey Reece at third base after a pop fly seventh-inning single.
Seven baserunners reached base by the time Great Bend Bat Cat Joey Marker broke up Kingman’s no-hitter with a 2-run single.
Kingman pitcher Andrew MacNeil walked six batters and hit three batters in a nightmarish 8-run first inning for the Islanders.
“I sit outside fastball a lot,” said Marker from Indianola, Iowa. “I saw fastball and went oppo.”
Jhett Creel’s bloop single scored Marker for a 7-0 lead. Carson Lorch, Ian George, Garrett Ninness, Jesse Ponce and Cooper Smith contributed RBIs with walks or hit by pitches.
Ponce scored on Smith’s sixth-inning double. Smith’s bases-loaded walk forced home Kyle Walker for the game-ending 10-0 run-rule victory. Ponce reached base five times and Smith four times.
The Bat Cats (4-0) journey to Kingman (3-1) Friday and Hutchinson Sunday before returning home Monday against defending NBC World Series champion Hutchinson.
