The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division game was well in hand for the Barton women’s basketball team.
A crushing start helped lead the Lady Cougars to a decisive 85-55 win over Colby on Saturday night at Kirkman Activity center.
“I thought we came out ready to play with a lot of focus and energy,” Barton head coach Carter Kruger said, “even more so than we’ve been playing with in our last few starts, which was great to see.”
Barton led by as much as 37 points in the second half, but the deficit at halftime was already nearly insurmountable.
Colby stuck with Barton for the first five minutes.
With 13:27 left in the first quarter, Barton started a 12-0 run on a pair of KK Anthony free throws.
Ashton Bruner, who missed a double-double with 14 points and nine assists, dropped in a layup and a pull-up jumper.
Cheyenne Hedrington, who led the Lady Cougars with 18 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, put in a shot jumper with Mariana Lambert following that up with a pair of free throws.
Bruner capped the run with a steal and layup with 9:43 remaining.
“Offensively, we had a lot of different kids contribute during that first-half stretch when we really jumped on them,” Kruger said. “What we’ve been struggling with is having multiple people play to their capabilities. That’s what we were looking to do tonight, and I’m glad that we had a lot of people contribute.”
Collectively, the Lady Cougars shot 50 percent (15-for-30) from the field in the first half.
“We did a nice job being aggressive and attacking,” Kruger said. “We need to continue to think about going up strong and getting to the free-throw line, getting those and-1s. One of the things that has been our Achilles Heel has been finishing around the basket, and I think we got a little stronger in that area tonight.”
Lambert had 15 points and eight rebounds.
