It was the first time that Barton Community College’s women’s basketball team broke the century mark, and they needed every point on Wednesday night at Kirkman Activity Center.
The Lady Cougars edged Dodge City 100-91 to improve to 14-4 overall, 2-0 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division.
“This is the way we wanted to start (conference play), we hope to go 3-0 and build off that,” Barton head coach Carter Kruger said. “We’ve got to keep getting better as a basketball team, and as long as we stay hungry, we’ll do that.”
Barton had five players in double figures, including Cheyenne Hedrington, who finished with 24 points and 15 rebounds for a double-double.
“Cheyenne did a great job, and Taylor (Mayes) did a great job,” Kruger said. “They both worked very hard, got great position and got good shots for us.”
The Lady Cougars opened up a 13-point lead with 5:46 remaining in the first half, with Hedrington scoring 11 of her points in the opening 20 minutes.
Barton relied on a strong shooting performance, shooting 50.7 percent (36-for-71) from the field. Dodge City shot 42.3 percent (33-for-78) from the field.
“We did a good job of attacking the basket,” Kruger said. “We got a lot of high-percentage shots. I think some of the 3s we shot, we could’ve punted, but then again, if we’re open, we want to shoot them.”
Even with a 14-point lead with 7:15 remaining in the game, Barton never quite put Dodge City out of the game.
“I thought we played really well offensively,” Kruger said. “We did a good job attacking the basket. Defensively, we need to get better at keeping them out of the lane.”
Kailai Brantner finished with 17 points and five assists.
Brandy Winbush and Mariana Lambert each scored 14 points, and Sharyce Warren added 10.
Ashton Bruner recorded nine boards.
