Barton grabs seasons first Jayhawk West victory, beats Dodge

It was somewhat of a scramble at times, specially early on, but a late run boosted the Barton Community College men’s basketball team over Dodge City 96-86 on Wednesday night at Kirkman Activity Center.
The win gives Barton a 13-5 overall record, 1-1 in the Western Division of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.
Things started off well for the Cougars, building a six-point lead five minutes into the game, but Dodge City, thanks to a couple of turnovers and a pair of 3-pointers, climbed back to take the lead midway through the opening period.
The Conquistadors remaining ahead until Barton’s Darius Gibson tied the game up at 44 with 1:42 remaining in the half with a 3-pointer from the top of the key.
Rashawn Walker gave the Cougars their first lead in nearly 15 minutes of play, making a pair of free throws to make it 46-44 heading into halftime.
The game was neck-and-neck until the Cougars pulled away with a 10-0 run with 4:35 remaining in the game.
DJ Johnson got a putback to put Barton ahead 79-75, followed by layups from Isaac Williams and Tyler Corley, bringing the Cougars ahead 83-75.
Raheem Johnson got back-to-back dunks to give the Cougars an 87-75 advantage with 2:42 left.
Barton kept its distance from Dodge City to close out the game.
Gibson finished with 27 points, going 8-for-9 from the free-throw line.
Raheem Johnson had a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Williams and Corley each finished with 14 points, and DJ Johnson added 11.
Corley was 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
As a team, Barton shot 50.7 (36-for-71) from the field. It shot 19 of 23 (82.6 percent) from the free-throw line.
The Conquistadors were led by EJ Eaves, who finished with 24 points.
George Brock added 23 points, including four 3-pointers.
Larry Beckett scored 20 points and grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds for Dodge City.
Barton travels to Cloud County on Saturday. The women’s game starts at 5:30 p.m., with the men’s game following at 7:30.

Black out game
scheduled
against Hutchinson
The Barton basketball teams will be hosting Hutchinson on Wednesday, Jan. 29.
Barton is supporting cancer awareness, scheduling a black out.
