HOISINGTON 54, SPEARVILLE 48 (OT)

LARNED – Hoisington’s all-tournament Kylee Hahn scored five points in overtime as the Cardinals outscored Spearville 54-48 Saturday to dethrone the three-time Gene Keady Classic basketball champion.

Hahn hit three free throws and Mallory Mooney made the game’s signature play with a steal and assist to Most Valuable Player Macy Hanzlick for a 52-47 lead.

The Cardinals (3-1) captured their sixth Gene Keady Classic title. Addy Mason scored 11 points and earned all-tournament honors.

ST. JOHN GIRLS 36, LARNED 30

LARNED – St. John's girls survived Larned's upset bid with a hard-fought 36-30 victory over the Indians for third place in the Gene Keady Basketball Ciassic.

St. John (3-1) was paced by Darby Smith with 13 points.Smith scored 11 of her 13 points in the first half for an 18-15 lead. 

Akielah Collins scored 14 points to lead a vastly-improved Larned ballclub. 

The low-scoring games featured tough defense as their calling card. It resulted in a tight, baskets-tough-to-come by game.

"We knew it would be tough to score," said Larned coach Jerrod Smith. "It always is against a Danny Smith-coached team. We knew turnovers would be big, and they were, as was the rebounding. Even though we lost, we played hard and competed. We need to get better at the little things."

Both teams switched to zone defenses as fatigue from back-to-back games took its toll. St. John used a ball-control offense throughout the fourth quarter. Three free throws attempted in the game.

The Tigers made 16 of 42 field goals for 38%.St. John improves to 3-1 with the win.

Larned made 13 of 39 field goal attempts for 33%. Larned plays Great Bend Tuesday.

LARNED – Macksville's girls rolled past Bucklin 62-38 for fifth place at the Gene Keady Basketball Classic. Kambry Adams sparked the Mustangs with a career high 15 points. Mayce Russell (13) and Abigail Ibarra (11) scored in double figures.

HOISINGTON GIRLS 42, ST. JOHN 39

LARNED  – Hoisington's girls overcame a 10-point deficit to down St. John 42-39 to qualify for the championship game of the Gene Keady Basketball Classic. 

Macy Hanzlick led the Cardinals (2-1) with 17 points and Addy Mason added nine points. Hanzlick converted two free throws for a 39-36 lead and Kylee Hahn scored a basket and free throw to hold off the No. 3 state-ranked 1A Tigers. The Cardinals outscored the Tigers 18-2 to take a 22-16 lead. The Tigers led 36-35 after a 10-2 burst.

Darby Smith sparked the Tigers with 13 points.

LARNED – Defending champion Spearville held off Larned's pesky girls 40-36 to qualify for the Gene Keady Basketball Classic championship.

Spearville outscored the Indians 26-16 after halftime. Anna Stein scored nine points.

Larned's Karley Lemuz scored 10 points and Akielah Collins added eight points.

Mason converted five 3-pointers before halftime. Jordyn Boxberger contributed 10 points. The Cardinals (1-1) play St. John in Friday's semifinals.

Macksville’s Mayce Russell scored 17 points. Abi Ibarra contributed eight rebounds and seven assists. Joselin Garcia had seven steals.
