Great Bend’s pitching staff worked together for a hard-earned 5-3 victory over the Newton Rebels in Sunday’s Sunflower Collegiate League baseball game. The Bat Cats (14-9, 16-10) journey to Mulvane Monday.
Bat Cat starter Easton Smith threw four innings and was followed by Jarret Seaton, Zach Poe and Will Mossa. The Bat Cats benefited from shoddy defense as they scored four unearned runs. The Bat Cats limited Newton to just one baserunner in eight of nine innings.
Bat Cat Daunte Freeman singled and scored on a second-inning error. Dawson Pomeroy reached on an error and scored on a double play.
Newton’s Tai Atkins drove home Peyton Cormane on a third-inning sacrifice fly. Luke Royle scored on an error for a 2-2 tie.
Nolan Riley drove in Luke Repka on a third-inning groundout. Pomeroy singled home Ryan Monson. Hunter Romero singled home Daunte Freeman for a 5-2 lead after a two-out error extended the inning off hard-luck starter Steven Dennis.
Newton’s Enzo Bonventre homered in the ninth inning off Mossa.
