The Hoisington Cardinal Wrestling team participated in their own Cardinal Corner Classic Wrestling Tournament this past Friday held in the Hoisington Activity Center. The team did not disappoint their fans as they placed nine wrestlers in the top three of the nine team powerhouse event. Ranked teams at the event included 6A number 7, Dodge City; 1-3A number 8, Marysville; and 1-3A number 4 Ranked Hoisington. If having one third of the field ranked was not enough throw in always tough 5A Great Bend; 6A Wichita North; and 4A Concordia, along with outstanding wrestlers from 4A Holcomb; 4A Larned; and 1-3A Cimarron and fans were able to witness some of the best early season matches anywhere in the state. Dodge city won the event with 191 points followed by Hoisington in second with 181 points, and Marysville finished third with 118.5 points justifying why those three teams are worthy of State Rankings. Dodge City placed seven kids in the top two with five of their wrestlers crowned champions. They also had two thirds on the day.
The team race was paced by Hoisington all day with the Cards controlling the lead until the final round. Both Dodge City and Hoisington were without some excellent wrestlers that should be in action down the line, but it did not deter from both teams doing very well. Coach Schmidt’s comments:
“I was very proud of our team effort. We had some kids that did not get on the medal stand that really performed well. I was very proud of a group of three kids that have been in the program for four years in Landon Harmon 120 lbs.; Brandon Ball 138 lbs.; and Chance Boor 220 lbs., as all three made it to the finals in very tough weight classes. Brandon and Landon were able to bring home gold, and Chance lost a good match to the class 1-3A number one ranked and 2nd at State last year Cooper from Cimarron in the finals. I was also very pleased with our young kids as freshman, Tanner Cassity 113 lbs.; sophomore, Johnathan Ball 145 lbs.; freshman, Christopher Ball 152 lbs.; and sophomore, Landen Urban 285 lbs. class all made it to the finals. I was very pleased with sophomore, Hunter Hanzlick at 170 lbs. who took the number one ranked in class 1-3A Josh Nelsen from Marysville all the way to the ultimate tie breaker in overtime to decide the match and place third behind another top ranked wrestler in 6-A Dylan Servis. Junior, Austin McHenry was not as solid as he typically is, and still managed to place second. You add into the mix senior, KC Stephens 195 lbs. getting fourth, and Kody Lang scoring much needed points for the team, and we had a very quality tournament performance.”
Next action for the Cardinal’s varsity team will come after the Christmas break when the team travels to Larned on Jan. 8, to participate in the Larned Duals Tournament starting at 4 p.m. They will than travel Jan. 10, to Ellsworth for the Bearcat Classic starting at 9 a.m. The Junior Varsity team will travel to WaKeeney to wrestle in the Trego J.V. Tournament starting at 9 a.m. on Jan. 10.
