LARNED—The Halstead Dragons hit their first 7 shots and 9 of 11 in the first quarter as they raced to a 20-9 lead, paving the way for a 55-33 Central Kansas League victory over the Larned Indians Monday evening.
Madi McClain poured in 12 first-quarter points and led the Lady Dragons to a 30-18 halftime lead. Larned had narrowed the lead to 27-18 but turned the ball over just before halftime and Josephine Engel buried a long 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to make the 12 point deficit and seized back any momentum Larned had gained.
The third quarter was a struggle of missed shots and turnovers as Halstead kept a 39-23 lead and used the fourth quarter to hold off Larned rallies.
“Again we didn’t shoot well, neither from the field or the free throw line but we kept battling,” said Larned coach Ashley Crosby. “ Halstead is a good young ball team and they shot the ball better than we did.”
Three players scored for Halstead, all sophomores, in Karenna Gerber, Madi McClain and Josephine Engel. The Lady Dragons hit 21 of 41 field goal attempts and 5 of 9 free throws. They were led in scoring by Madi McClain with 27 while Karenna Gerber added 15 and Josephine Engel 13. Halstead (16-4, 7-3 CKL) plays at the the Haven 3A substate.
Larned (8-11, 4-5 CKL) hit 14 of 51 attempts and 5 of 15 free throws. The Indians were led in scoring by Katie Fischer with 13 and Katelyn Sanger with 12.
Larned plays at Kismet Friday and will play Hugoton Monday in the 3A substate.
