LAKE BARTON — Ellinwood freshman Drew Heinz delivered a spectacular varsity debut with an 80 that earned medalist honors at Thursday's Hoisington Invitational competed at Lake Barton Golf Course.
"Congratulations to Drew Heinz on his first high school championship Thursday," said Ellinwood coach Greg Maxwell. "Drew had a strong start and won by four strokes in windy and tough conditions. It was great to see Drew play at a championship level."
Larned's Eastin Fitzpatrick (84) placed runner-up and Ellsworth's Avery Haxton (90) placed third.
Larned (409) captured the team title by also counting seventh-place medalist Reed McNett (99), 12th-place Talon Reynolds (108) and 17th-place Mark Hamrick (118) and Gryffin Cowell (118).
Fifth-place medalist Nolan Wilborn (96) led Hoisington and Sam Baldyga (104) earned 10th-medalist honors.
Ellinwood (418) placed fourth after restarting its golf program.
"The players gained valuable experience," Maxwell said. "With each experience, players learn from their mistakes. They'll gain confidence and momentum. I'm excited to see what the players can accomplish."
