ELLINWOOD 49, MEDICINE LODGE 42

SPEARVILLE – Ellinwood’s Britton Dutton rescued the Eagles with a 24-point performance that sparked a 49-42 semifinal victory over Medicine Lodge in Thursday’s Spearville 2A basketball semifinal.

Ellinwood (18-4) earns a rematch at 2 p.m. Saturday with Sterling (16-5) after losing last year’s 2A substate championship 43-37 to the Black Bears. Ellinwood last qualified for the state basketball tournament in 1984. Ellinwood earned runner-up state finishes in 1957 and 1976.

Dutton scored 17 second-half points. Parker Scheck scored on a 3-point play to give the Eagles the lead 43-40. Dutton converted four free throws and Alek Brack and Koy Behnke each made one clutch free throw in the final quarter. Gage Hosman scored nine points.

Cauy Scripsick and Theron Wedel each scored 12 points for Medicine Lodge (11-10).

PEABODY – Brynna Hammeke scored 25 points and Kassidy Nixon scored 20 points as No. 1 ranked Oilers raced past Hartford 70-18 in Thursday’s 1A Division 2 basketball substate.

The Oilers (18-3) have swept a state record 43-game postseason winning streak. The Oilers have won six consecutive state basketball titles.

The Oilers meet McPherson Elyria (16-5) in Saturday’s 2 p.m. championship game at Peabody.

NORWICH – Norwich’s Avery Rosenhagen drilled a crucial 3-pointer to spark the Eagles past St. John 40-36 in Thursday’s 1A Division 1 basketball substate. The Tigers (12-10) led the first half, but Norwich (16-3) controlled the second half.

St. John’s Heidi Fisher scored 14 points and Darby Smith added seven points. Norwich’s Brittany Gosch scored 18 points. Norwich beat Pretty Prairie 32-18 when the teams met Jan. 15.

MOSCOW – Pawnee Heights Jaden Carlson scored 18 points and Madison Polson added 15 points as the Tigers sped past Moscow 53-10 in Thursday’s 1A Division 2 basketball semifinal. Olivia Hands scored 10 points and dominated the rebounding.

The Tigers (10-9) will meet Ashland (12-7) in Saturday’s championship. Ashland has swept the Tigers 55-42 and 41-28.
