Panther girls tie Andale for title
BY JIM MISUNAS
Great Bend’s girls ended the newly-named Jack Bowman Track Invitational with a dramatic finish they’ll remember forever.
With Bowman cheering them on, the Panther girls (4:10.0) sprinted past defending 4A champion Andale (4:10.39) to earn a share of the team championship with 138 points apiece. Eliana Beckham, Makenzie Premer, Sadie Spray and freshman Kara Feist edged the Indians by a split second.
Of course, there was drama. Things were in proper order when Feist dropped the baton with a 30-meter lead. Somehow, some way, she found a way to pass Andale’s Maddie Schrandt.
“We were 30 meters ahead and Kara dropped the baton,” said Great Bend coach Lyles Lashley. “Feist was 10 meters behind. But she came back and roared to the finish. The ran the girls were running, we’d run 4:05. Hard to believe. At one point, we were 40 points behind. All of a sudden, heck, we were four points back. We’re excited. We knew it’d be a battle.”
Premer enjoyed a near perfect day with first-place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles (15.59) with a career-best time and the 300-meter hurdles (45.76). Premer overcame a misfire in the 100-meter hurdles when a restart was required. She ran a consistent race, stepping over each hurdle with precision.
“That start got my heart-rate going. My adrenaline was going,” Premer said. “I thought, ‘I got to do it again?’ But I got another good start. I PR’d, so I’m pleased with that. It was very good competition from everybody. I had to make sure I did everything right today.”
Great Bend’s Taryn Warren won the discus (113-41/2) and placed runner-up in the shot put (35-11) behind Andale’s Mckenzie Fairchild.
Runner-up finishes were earned by Eliana Beckham, 800 (2:31.05); Macy Nachtigal, javelin (110-0); the 400-meter relay (50.41) with Valarie Luna, Kara Feist, Spray and Premer; and the 3,200-meter relay (10;30.29) with Emma Loomis, Addy Nicholson, Beckham and Darcy Feist.
Hoisington’s Shellamae Farmer (10-6) placed runner-up in the pole vault
PANTHER BOYS – Standouts Kaiden Esfeld and Oliver Dominguez swept two first-place finishes. Esfeld swept the 800 (1:57.87) and 1,600 (4:25.91) with season-best times. Dominguez won the 400 meters (50.69) and triple jump (44-101/2).
Other Panther runner-up finishers were Madison Regehr, 110-meter hurdles (15.77); Cayden Scheuerman, 200 (23.66); and the 1,600-meter relay (3:28.72) with Dominguez, Esfeld, Alex Galindo and Regehr.
“The boys competed great today,” Lashley said. “Kaiden Esfeld and Oliver Dominguez were really good today. We had a bunch of season-best efforts today.”
