Bombers baseball wins Lenexa title

LENEXA — The Bombers 13-and-under baseball team captured its third baseball championship this summer at Lenexa. The Bombers own a 32-9-3 record.

Team members are Campbell Coleman, Lane French, Hunter Herrman, Nolan Jacobs, Owen Kaiser, Slade Mohr, Peyden Oelger, Jace Schartz, Brody Schnobelen, Carson Umphres and Tatum Harper. 

Helping direct the team are Mike Minton, Zack Kaiser, Keri Kaiser, Darin Schartz and Chris Umphres.

The Bombers captured first place in three summer baseball tournaments and finished runner-up in two other tournaments. The 13-year-old division employs 80-foot bases and a 54-foot pitching distance.

“The guys have done an amazing job,” said coach Chris Umphres. “It’s been a fun summer. We’re really surprised we’ve gotten more than 40 games played after everything was shut down during the spring. The guys have really developed as baseball players.”

The Bombers have emphasized that everyone on the team pitch. All of the Bombers have thrown including Brody Schnobelen, who has recovered from a health ailment to develop into a productive player.

“The guys leasrn to throw strikes and let their defense work for them,” Umphres said. “They’ve produced two strikeouts for every walk we give up.”      

BOMBERS 13, FUEL 6 (CHAMPIONSHIP) — Coleman led the way with three hits and two RBIs. Kaiser drove home two runs.

Umphres and Kaiser scored on errors and French scored on a bases-loaded walk. Mohr singled in Schnoebelen in a four-run first inning. Coleman singled in French in the third inning. Kaiser and Coleman delivered RBI hits in a four-run fourth inning. Kaiser and French scored on errors.

Kaiser and Schnoebelen drove in runs, Herrman scored on an error and Kaiser scored on a balk in a four-run fifth inning.   

BOMBERS 15, CCBC 9 — Umphres scored four runs with three hits and three RBIs. 

Umphres, Kaiser and Mohr delivered RBIs in a four-run first inning. Pinch runner Schartz scored on a wild pitch. Herrman scored on Umphres’ triple and Jacobs, Umphres and pinch runner Schartz scored on second-inning errors for an 8-1 lead.

Oelger scored on third-inning wild pitch.

Umphres and Schnoebelen scored on fourth-inning errors. Herrman and Kaiser delivered RBI hits and Herrman and Schartz scored on fifth-inning errors. 

BOMBERS 12, SOAR 10 — Reliever Herrman recorded the final three outs to preserve a hard-fought victory. Kaiser drove in three runs and Umphres and Coleman doubled twice and each had two RBIs. 

Kaiser and Schnoebelen delivered RBI hits in the first inning. Kaiser ripped a two-run single and Coleman, Mohr, Herman and Umphres added RBI hits in a six-run second inning. Coleman’s single drove in French for a 9-5 lead.

Umphres singled in Jacobs for a 10-6 lead. French and Jacobs delivered RBI hits in a two-run fifth inning.

IOLA KANSAS CYCLONES 17, BOMBERS 7 — Iola had three big scoring innings to overwhelm the Bombers. Schnoebelen drove in two runs.

Herrman scored on a wild pitch and Schnoebelen tripled home Umphres in a two-run first inning. Oelger singled home French in the second frame. Herrman scored on an error and Schnoebelen doubled home Schartz in a two-run third inning.

Schartz scored on a balk and Umphres scored on a fifth-inning error.

BOMBERS 19, SOAR 7 — Coleman and Kaiser each drove home four runs and Mohr drove in three runs in a 13-hit attack.

Coleman hit a three-run triple and Umphres and Schnoebelen added RBIs in a six-run first inning. Kaiser and Mohr delivered two-run hits in a five-run second inning.

Kaiser and French ripped two-run doubles and Schartz and Coleman added RBI hits in a six-run third inning. Schartz hit an RBI single and scored on a passed ball in a two-run fourth inning.

Larned softball wins opener LARNED — Larned's softball team scored 39 runs to dominate the Ellis Railroaders 21-4 and 18-5 in Friday's doubleheader. LARNED 21, ELLIS 4 (G1) — Larned's Brooks Simmons tripled and drove home a trio of runs. Driving home a pair of runs were Eowyn Hedding, Maya Wilson, Teagan Walker, Jadyn Crosby and Jillian Hagerman. Hagerman and Karley Lemuz each doubled. Lemuz (2-0) pitched five innings to earn the victory. The Indians took advantage of nine walks, seven errors, six wild pitches and two hit batters. Ellis' Maleah Vine drove home two runs. Rylan Aschenbrenner had an RBI LARNED 18, ELLIS 5 (G2) — Larned's Hedding doubled and drove in three runs. Walker and Hagerman each drove in two runs. Driving home one run were Lemuz, Brooke Simmins, Crosby, Ivy Hope and Gillian Smith. Crosby (2-0) pitched five innings to earn the victory. Railroader Vine drove home two runs.
