Wildcats hold off Cardinals

HOISINGTON – The Hoisington Cardinals sliced a 22-point lead to six points with a furious fourth-quarter rally.

But Central Kansas League leader Haven held off the Cardinals 64-56 in Thursday’s basketball game. The Wildcats led 35-18 at halftime and extended the lead to 22 points in the third period.

Hoisington's Drew Nicholson scored 11 fourth-quarter points and Chase Robinson and Braden Mooney hit 3-pointers to slice the lead to 60-54. Mooney delivered a memorable varsity debut by hitting his first 3-pointer.

The Cardinals (6-8, 2-3 CKL) outplayed and outfought the Wildcats (11-4, 4-0 CKL) after playing soft the first half.

"We played with toughness and grit and that’s the way we need to play," said Hoisington coach Kyle Haxton.

But it was too late because Haven’s 6-4 Wyatt Carmichael dominated inside with 22 points. Jamar Miller (14), Kaleb Dale (13) and Clay Schmucker (11) scored in double figures.

The Cardinals solved Haven’s trapping 1-3-1 defense by attacking the middle after halftime.

Mason Haxton scored 11 points and Braxton Donovan and Homecoming king Xavier Robinson each added eight points. Haxton delivered six rebounds, four assists and four steals in a solid all-around effort.
