Hod Rod Magazine Drag Week hits Great Bend

Hot Rod Magazine Drag Week comes to Great Bend this morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sunflower Rod Custom Association Drag Strip.
Gates open at 8, and admission is free for the drag races, which feature 11 different divisions in the National Hot Rod Association.
The significance and impact that the S.R.C.A. Drag Strip has had on drag racing has been enormous since the first National Championship Drag Races were held on this same track on Sept. 29-Oct. 22, 1955.
The dragsters raced in Topeka before heading to Great Bend on Monday afternoon. Eyewitnesses traveling through Topeka spotted several race cars heading west on Interstate 70 toward Great Bend.
That’s the intriguing thing about Drag Week. The cars must travel the route to the next city in the car they race on tracks.
The racers leave for Amarillo, Texas this afternoon.
