HUTCHINSON  Hoisington Cardinal senior Ava Henry (180, 92/88) enjoyed a personal low score of 88 Tuesday to earn a 12th-place state medal at the 3-1A state golf tournament.

Henry parred three of the four par 3s Tuesday  at Hutchinson's Carey Park Golf Course. Weather conditions were challenging. Temperatures started in the 30s and hit a high of 51 with a north wind of 10 to 15 mph.

"This is my P.R. today. I was surprised how well I played," Henry said. "I focused on having fun and when I made a mistake, I shook it off. I tried to score better than Monday. My driver helped me out today. It was cold, but playing conditions got better as the day went along."

The Cardinals just missed a third-place trophy with a fourth-place finish (773, 391/382). The Cardinals counted scores by 14th-place medalist Tricia Schremmer 184 (90/94), 38th-place Addison Guthrie 200 (104/96) and 44th-place Lexus Petersilie 209 (105/104). Ally Karst 216 (106/110) and Kaylee Shives 222 (112/110). also competed during the 2-day championship.

"Making the second day of state golf has been a goal since our first day," Henry said. "That's the first time in four years we've qualified for the second day together."

Henry and Guthrie played their final tournament. The Cardinals won six regular-season titles and finished runner-up at regionals.

"It's been a great four years for our seniors," said Hoisington coach Bruce Cooper. "This was truly an enjoyable group to coach. They're great girls with supportive parents."

Cooper said the players handled challenging wind Monday and cold temperatures Tuesday. The Cardinals posted a season-low score of 382 Tuesday in brisk conditions.

"We achieved our goal to make it to the second day. We're pleased how our girls battled for two days," Cooper said. "They had poor holes, but played through that. The girls won six tournaments this year and that gave them confidence."

Wichita Collegiate's defending state champion Margaret Ulrich (146, 69/77) cruised to an 8-stroke victory while carding birdies at Nos. 12 and 14 Tuesday. Ulrich birdied Nos. 2, 3 and 12 Monday. Pittsburg's Colgan's Ali Scripsick (154, 77/77) placed runner-up.

Pittsburg Colgan 660 (338-332) captured its third straight title and cruised to a 57-stroke victory over runner-up Colby 717 (361/356). Colgan featured four top 10 finishers.

Larned's Jocelyn Clawson, (108) and Erin Tims (123) missed the 18-hole cut. Clawson achieved a goal with a birdie 4 at No. 2.
