WICHITA — St. John Tiger Jericho Mawhirter hit his stride at a perfect time by capturing the 1A 400-meter gold medal (50.69). Mawhirter (50.65) posted the top qualifying time. Mawhirter placed eighth in the 100 meters (11.3).
St. John's 400-meter relay (44.66) placed fifth with Braxton Alpers, Mawhirter, Jace Reyes and Kaden Foote. Alpers placed fourth in the triple jump (43-63/4).
Chase's Malik Carson (22-13/4) captured a 1A state long jump title, edging Otis-Bison's runner-up Gavin Alloway (21-91/2). Carson placed third in the 200 (22.57) and fourth in the 100 (11.16) to score 21 points.
St. John and Chase scored 21 points and tied for 11th place in 1A boys.
Stafford's distance runner Joel Valadez posted season-best times while placing fourth in the 1,600 meters (4:38.01) and 3,200 meters (9:59.01).
