LANGDON – Britton Dutton's mastery against the Fairfield Falcon defenders was a true artist working his magic.
Ellinwood's super sophomore scored a career high 38 points with majestic stop-and-go drives to the basket, up-and-under scores and a trio of 3-pointers. Dutton's magic delivered a dominating 68-34 victory over the Fairfield Falcons in Saturday's championship game. Ellinwood also captured last year's Falcon Classic championship.
The No. 10 ranked 2A Eagles (4-0) overcame first-quarter foul trouble with attacking play at both ends of the court. The Eagles converted several of Fairfield's 18 turnovers into an effective fast-break offense. A 15-11 lead grew to 39-16 with a perfect mix of transition and half-court offense. The Eagles outscored the Falcons 24-5 in the final 51/2 minutes by scoring 11 points off turnovers.
All-tournament Dutton cruised to a 21-point first half that led to a 39-16 lead. On most occasions, Fairfield refused to double team Dutton or deny him the basketball. When the Falcons packed into a zone defense after halftime, Dutton swished three consecutive 3-pointers. He also converted a trio of 2-pointers for a 15-point third quarter.
"When you make 3s, they'll come and guard you closer," said Dutton, who's averaging 25 points. "When they guard me tighter, I'll drive it past them. I try and do that every game. We moved the ball pretty good and shot the ball today."
Ellinwood coach Derek Joiner said the wide open style was perfect for Dutton, who's a superb ballhandler.
"It's really hard to defend Britton when the game is fast and in a flow as opposed to five-on-five," Joiner said. "We had seen on film they dropped their zone off. We kicked it back outside for some 3s."
On a rare occasion when Dutton was defended, he'd drop off a nifty assist to a happy teammate. All-tournament Tyler Stuhlsatz added 10 points and Koy Behnke added eight points.
"We're working really hard and that's helped us a lot," Dutton said. "Tyler (Stuhlsatz) came through Thursday when we saw a box-and-one defense."
Joiner liked the way his team is playing defense outside of some occasional foul trouble. The Eagles used an effective trapping defense to frustrate the Falcons.
"We're fortunate we have ability to play a variety of defenses," Joiner said. "Our zone threw them off that second quarter and we got into transition with some steals."
The Eagles' defense also shut down Fairfield's Ethan Waters, who averaged 26 points in three games. The Eagles' zone shadowed Waters and Dutton denied him when they played man-to-man. Waters scored eight points, but made one field goal. Cody Canady and Brady Fowler each scored seven points.
"We didn't let him drive the ball to the basket," Dutton said.
Ellinwood plays at Ell-Saline Tuesday and return home Ellis Friday.
"We're a talented, but a young team. We're focused on cleaning some things up to see how good a team we can be. We're gaining experience. We're showing our athletic ability.
