LARNED — On a night the Larned seniors were honored, the Lady Indians won their first basketball game of the season, 40-33 over visiting Southwestern Heights Friday.

Larned closed the game by making seven straight shots, including three 3-pointers, to race past the Mustangs. Smiles appeared on the faces of Larned’s three seniors, Kaylee Mead, Kendra Grandy and Lynzi Myrick as the realization that a 19-game losing streak was over. Larned outscored Southwestern Heights 25-9 in the pivotal fourth quarter.
“I'm so happy for my girls," said Larned coach Ashley Crosby. "It 's been a tough season, but they have always hung in there and played hard. I was pleased to see shots start to fall. They were due. What a great night for my seniors!”

After a 2 of 23 first half, Larned converted 10 of 17 field goals for 12 of 40 shooting. The Indians made 13 of 23 free throws. Jayme Hagerman led the Indians with 11 points. Lynzi Myrick added eight and Reagan Krehbiel and Julie Tapia added five apiece.

Larned (1-19) travels to Halstead Tuesday.

For three quarters it didn’t look probable that a victory was in the cards. The Mustangs led 4-2 after one quarter and 16-6 at halftime. Another defeat looked imminent for the Lady Indians.
Larned trailed 24-15 at the end of the third quarter. Larned made 4 of 30 field goals,  but something happened in the fourth quarter: Larned made a few shots and started converting free throws. Suddenly, it was a ball game!

The Mustangs (2-18)  made 9 of 29 field goals, but cashed in 11 of 22 free throws. Susana Carrillo scored 11 points with a trio of 3-point baskets. Michelle Alvidrez added nine points and Anaee Gutierrez seven.
