Larned Indians place third at CKL meet

Larned's No. 1 singles runner-up Audrey Manry hits a backhand against Hoisington's Audrie Harms in a 7-1 victory.

LINDSBORG — Powerhouse Hesston (69) edged Smoky Valley (68) with Larned (57) finishing third in Saturday’s Central Kansas League girls tennis tournament. Hesston has swept seven consecutive CKL tennis titles.

Larned’s No. 1 singles Audrey Manry (22-4) placed third with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Hoisington’s Isabelle Gonzalez (9-7). Hesston’s Gracie Dawes (18-5) defeated Pratt’s Erin Jackson (18-10),  7-5, 6-4 in the championship match. Dawes downed Gonzalez 6-1, 6-2 and Jackon edged Manry, 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals.

Smoky Valley’s No. 2 singles Karee Adam downed Larned Indian Ella McNett (20-5), 6-4, 7-6 (7-0) for first place. McNett beat Hesston’s Maggie Carlson, 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals. Nickerson’s Zoe Coonce defeated Hoisington’s Ashlynn George, 9-7 for fifth place.

Hillsboro’s Kyla Isaac/Cheyenne Funk defeated Larned’s No. 1 doubles Kathryn Holt/Abigail Holt, 6-3, 6-4 for third place. Smoky Valley’s Karik Ellott/Lena Rauchholz (20-6) defeated Hesston’s Michaela Martin/Cassandra Albin (6-4), 6-1, 6-3 in the championship match. Holt/Holt (18-8) lost 6-0, 6-2 to Hesston’s Martin/Albin in the semifinals.

Hesston’s Emily Friesen/Amala John defeated Larned’s No. 2 doubles Ava Mull/Sarah Manry, 4-6, 6-3 (10-7) for third place. Smoky Valley’s Riley Ahlstedt/Campbell Gaskill (19-8) downed Hillsboro’s Callie Plenert/Callie Bernhardt, Hillsboro, 6-3, 6-1 for first place. Plenert/Bernhardt defeated Mull/Manry, 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals.

Larned travels to Scott City and Hoisington competes at Phillipsburg Friday/Saturday for 3-1A tennis regionals.

Larned softball wins opener LARNED — Larned's softball team scored 39 runs to dominate the Ellis Railroaders 21-4 and 18-5 in Friday's doubleheader. LARNED 21, ELLIS 4 (G1) — Larned's Brooks Simmons tripled and drove home a trio of runs. Driving home a pair of runs were Eowyn Hedding, Maya Wilson, Teagan Walker, Jadyn Crosby and Jillian Hagerman. Hagerman and Karley Lemuz each doubled. Lemuz (2-0) pitched five innings to earn the victory. The Indians took advantage of nine walks, seven errors, six wild pitches and two hit batters. Ellis' Maleah Vine drove home two runs. Rylan Aschenbrenner had an RBI LARNED 18, ELLIS 5 (G2) — Larned's Hedding doubled and drove in three runs. Walker and Hagerman each drove in two runs. Driving home one run were Lemuz, Brooke Simmins, Crosby, Ivy Hope and Gillian Smith. Crosby (2-0) pitched five innings to earn the victory. Railroader Vine drove home two runs.
