MCPHERSON -- Great Bend goalie Adam Trendel and a stout defensive effort kept McPherson scoreless for 36 minutes.

Trendel delivered several highlight-reel saves, including a stop against Dmitry Peters. The Panthers exhibited quick point-to-point passing that moved the ball effectively.

McPherson busted loose with three goals off restarts for a 3-0 victory to avenge last year's 1-0 setback.

McPherson's Parker Riemann scored after a corner kick when the ball was deflected in a crowded box (36:17) for a 1-0 halftime lead.

"We've got to mark players and be ready," said Great Bend soccer coach Chuy Loera.

The Bullpups sealed the victory with second-half goals by Yahir Valadez (54:19) and Leonardo Gaspar Mendez (76:04).

The Panthers created quality first-half shots by Jackson Young, Rafa Chavez, Ricardo Cruz and Giovanni Cruz that were turned away by goalie Hunter Schroeder. Schroeder preserved his shutout by stopping a penalty kick.

Other Panther starters were midfielders Byron Meza and forwards Dustin Fuggitt, Fernando Lopez and Ezekeiel Ibarra, defenders Francisco Alvarez and Julian Ordonez.

"We focused on each 10-minutes and tried to maintain our energy," Loera said. "We have to clean a few mistakes on the defensive side. When we make adjustments, we'll be ready to go."

Loera saw Ricardo Cruz lead the offense.

"Ricardo Cruz did a good job controlling the middle so we could build counter-attacks," he said. "We pushed forward and built some attacks."

The Panthers play Wichita West Tuesday and Liberal Thursday at home.
