PRATT — Central Plains Oiler No. 1 singles Peyton Ryan (24-0), No. 2 singles Hunter Klima (16-7) and No. 2 doubles Peyton Dody/Isiah Jensen (4-0) captured first-place medals at the recent Pratt Tennis Tournament.
No. 1 doubles Paxton Dody/Nethan Cauthon (15-11) placed runner-up with a 8-6 loss to South Barber's Bryson Rathgeber/Briggs Jewell.
The Oilers journey to WaKeeney Thursday/Friday for a 3-1A tennis regional.
Ryan (94-2 career) has lost to Wichita Collegiate state champion Nicholas Grabon and Rossville state champion Alex Sherer the past two years at the state tournament.
"Peyton’s ability to get to the net and finish points along with his serve are what he's improved the most," said Central Plains coach Michael Ryan. "Peyton's biggest strength is he doesn’t make many mistakes. He does a good job of keeping the ball in play."
Coach Ryan is confident that his younger brother will fare well at regionals.
"There's competition at regionals, but he has direct or indirect wins over most of the top players," he said.
Coach Ryan believes the other Oiler entries will make a strong push for the state tournament.
"Our doubles teams (Paxton Dody/Nethan Cauthon) (Peyton Dody/Eli Hurley) and our other singles player (Hunter Klima) are sitting right on the line whether they will make it or not," coach Ryan said. "They are a very coachable group, which makes it very enjoyable. Our main goal is to keep stacking good days. We want to play our best tennis at regionals and state. I'm hopeful we can get another entry or two into the state tournament."
