Oilers lose District showdown to Mustangs 26-14

SYLVAN GROVE – Sylvan-Lucas’s Lane Homewood scored three touchdowns and delivered the game-changing interception to spark the Mustangs past Central Plains 26-14 in Friday’s Eight-Man 2, District 5 football showdown.

Sylvan-Lucas (5-0, 2-0) plays Victoria (3-1, 1-0) Oct. 13. for the District 5 championship. Central Plains (3-2, 0-2) plays Otis-Bison (0-5, 0-1) at home Oct. 6

Homewood scored on a 2-yard dash after Brody Batchman's 50-yard run to the 4-yard line.

The Oilers responded with a 6-play, 51-yard drive when Eli Hurley scored on a 1-yard run.

Homewood delivered the game’s biggest play with a 43-yard interception return on a pass by Oiler quarterback Brody Crites for a 14-6 halftime lead after the 2-pointer was converted.

Sylvan-Lucas took advantage of excellent field position on a 20-yard second-half drive capped by Homewood’s 1-yard score for a 20-6 lead. Connor Charvat scored on a 9-yard dash for a 26-6 lead.

Central Plains took advantage of a blocked punt. Crites completed a 4-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Klima for a 26-14 final score.

Sylvan-Lucas back Batchman rushed for 61 yards and Homewood gained 55 yards as the Mustangs rushed for 164 yards. Hurley gained 60 yards on 13 carries.
