SALINA -- Great Bend Panther Bryce Moore stayed red hot with a 702 series that captured Thursday's 5A regional bowling medalist honors.
Moore led the Panthers to third place (3,195 pins) and a spot in the 5A state championship Feb. 28 at Wichita's Northrock Lanes.
Great Bend was the 5A state runner-up and Moore was the 5A state runner-up.
Salina South (3,342) and McPherson (3,266) finished first and second.
Cordell Stanley placed 10th (599). Others competing were Jordan Black (526), A.J. Roberts (598), Blake Sheets (485) and Dalton Dicks (495). Moore, Roberts and Stanley posted a pair of 200-plus games.
Dicks built momentum by converting a difficult 4/10 split in the third Baker game. The Panthers shot 212/146/199/206 (763) in Baker games.
“Dalton was a catalyst when he converted a 4/10 split,” said Great Bend coach Mike Perry. “A teammate told him to ‘go for it.’ He barely hit the 4-pin and that hit the 10-pin. The whole crowd was cheering for us. We followed with a ‘turkey.’
Perry said lane conditions were challenging.
“As long as you’re qualified for state, it doesn’t matter how you did it,” Perry said.
The Great Bend also qualified for 5A state with a third-place finish (2,711) behind Salina South (3,189) and Buhler (2,801).
Competing were sixth-place Paige Wagner (547), seventh-place Lexy Fox (532), Kristy Wittig (398), Nichole Griffin (472), Sarah Mehlhaff (426) and Shanaeia Mehlhaff (437). Griffin scored a career best 192 game.
The Panthers posted Baker scores of 178/146/188/183 (695) to pikc up 90 pins on Buhler.
“We converted lots of spares and got some doubles,” Perry said. “Those were really good Baker scores for us.”
