WAMEGO – Great Bend’s dynamic Alex Schremmer was smoking hot as usual with a splendid 28-point performance.

But it was supersubs Korbin Widiger (10 points) and Nick Wondra (8 points) who delivered off the bench to beat Wamego 58-42 in Tuesday’s non-league basketball game.

Great Bend (5-9, 2-1) rolls into Friday’s Homecoming game against Liberal with a three-game winning streak.

Schremmer sparked the Panthers with a stunning 19-point first half for a 32-14 halftime lead. Wondra paid immediate dividends with a 3-pointer and five first-half points.

“It’s great to see because they’re growing up before our eyes,” said Great Bend coach Tim Brooks. “They’ve taken their lumps the past two years. Now, we’re playing well and playing for each other. The big difference is we’re making shots. Now, we fight when we’re not making shots.”

Wamego (6-9) made several second-half runs keyed by T.J. Fritz’s 23 points.

But Widiger delivered the biggest play of the second half with a 3-pointer for a 40-28 lead. Widiger scored eight second-half points, including two key free throws.

“Our bench keeps us in it with their energy,” Brooks said. “Corbin hit a big three and knocked down two big free throws.”

Defensive standout Brock Blessing drew two charges on Fritz and Wondra denied Fritz on several possessions.

“We did a good job defensively,” Brooks said.
