NEWTON – Great Bend Panther Cole Streck (76) tied for fifth medalist honors and Brantley Baldwin (77) tied for seventh in Thursday’s Newton Invitational at Sand Creek Station Golf Course. Streck birdied Nos. 4 and 18. Brantley earned birdies at Nos. 5, 8 and 18.

The Panthers (320) finished third, four strokes behind champion Maize South (316) and Wichita Carroll (316) in 55-degree weather accompanied by light winds. Cal Dunekack (81) placed 16th and Scott Heilman (86) placed 32nd.

“I’m encouraged by the toughness and fight the guys are showing,” said Great Bend coach Travis McAtee. “Despite not getting off to good starts, the guys battled and managed to shoot very respectable scores, just four shots from the winning score.  We need to continue to improve putting on faster greens and we need to start a bit better. Overall, our confidence and becoming comfortable on the greens will be key to our success moving forward.  I’m pleased with where we’re at.  I‘m confident that the guys will continue to improve. With four guys competing, we finished third of 16 teams.”

Hutchinson High’s Ty Adkins (71) won by two strokes over Maize South’s Kyle Kasitz (73). Adkins birdied Nos. 4, 14, 15 and 18 to close with a surge. Maize South (316) won a fifth-score tiebreaker with Wichita Carroll (316).
