ARKANSAS CITY — Great Bend's No. 2 ranked Jace Schartz (37-5, 157) led 10 Panthers who qualified for the 5A state wrestling tournament at Park City. First-place finisher Schartz pinned Goddard's Eastyn Vieyra (5:33) in the championship match.

Schartz earned his 100th career victory and edged Hutchinson's No. 1 ranked Kade Smith 3-2 in the 157-pound semifinals. Schartz earned 1-point escapes to reach overtime and win the match.

"Jace wrestled a 'technical' match and finished it," said Great Bend coach Gannon Reichert. "He kept attacking."

Placing third with bounce-back wins were No. 6 Kaiden Hoffman (32-8, 132); Hayden Kelly (26-11, 138); No. 3 Cooper Liles (26-3, 150); No. 6 Aiden Davidson (23-6, 175); and No. 3 Trenton Kern (30-6, 190).

"You've got to take it one match at a time," Reichert said. "The guys looked forward to the next match. That's the best Hayden has wrestled all year. He needs to bring that same kind of attitude to state. We expect strong finishes at state."

In third-place matches Hoffman pinned Salina Central's No. 4 Julian Glover (1:57); Kelly defeated Newton's No. 6 Nate Barron, 2-1; Liles pinned Salina Central's Abram Owings (0:46); Davidson defeated Hays High's No. 5 Jon Rigler, 5-1; and Kern avenged an earlier loss by pinning Valley Center's No. 5 Steel Schomaker (3:58).
