DODGE CITY TOURNAMENT

DODGE CITY — Great Bend Panthers Daizy Gomez (125), Kaylea McMullen (120) and Natalee Daniels (190) earned runner-up finishes at the Dodge City Wrestling Tournament. Great Bend (114) finished fifth behind No. 1 6A Dodge City (205).

In championship matches, No. 1 ranked 6A Dodge City Ariana De La Rosa downed Gomez for the third time 10-3; Emporia's Katina Keosybounheuang pinned McMullen (0:21) and Angel Sanchez of Dumas, Texas edged Daniels, 4-3.

"We're trying to get over the hump against De La Rosa. She didn't make any mistakes. She found a counter to what we were doing," said Great Bend coach Nathan Broeckelman. "Natalee is coming along strong. She's got good leverage. She led all the way. It was a good tournament."

Sierra Ferguson (130) and Haylee Holinde (235) placed fourth. Loya of Dumas pinned Ferguson. Jones of Dumas pinned Holinde (3:22).

GREAT BEND BOYS — No. 4 Jace Schartz (150) placed third with a 7-2 victory over Gardner-Edgerton's No. 2 Therron Meade after being pinned in 3:52 to Dodge City's No. 4 Kaden Garvelena. Kevyn Schroeder (215) placed third with a pin (1:49) over Arnoldo Hernandez of Dumas, Texas.

"Jace wrestled well and dominated the Gardner-Edgerton kid," said Broeckelman. "Jace was in a tough bracket."

Placing fifth were Triston Tomlinson (106) and Trenton Kern (190). Tomlinson beat Brahm Kreb of Canyon, Texas 8-0. Kern defeated Dodge City's Asa Moreno 14-5.

Hoxie (208.5) won the team title and Great Bend (81.5) placed eighth.

The Panthers encountered a pair of nervous moments when No. 6 Skyler McMullen (138) and No. 4 Cooper Liles (157) sustained tournament-ending injuries.

McMullen was sidelined in a match when his arm got trapped against Dodge City's Ramses Ruiz. Liles was sidelined in a match against Manhattan's Isaac Sinks.

Broeckelman said the officials didn't see that McMullen's arm was trapped in a potentially dangerous situation that caused him to lose consciousness when he was swung to the mat. Liles was injured in an 11-0 loss to Goddard's Zach Wessley.
