Panther girls win Carroll cross country

WICHITA – Every point matters.

Great Bend’s girls edged Wichita-Kapaun Mt. Carmel by one point 50 to 51 to capture the team title at Saturday’s Wichita Carroll cross country invitational.

Great Bend’s Marissa Boone (19:41) earned third-medalist honors, eight seconds behind Wichita Trinity medalist Brecken Howell (19:33). The other Panthers who counted were fifth-place medalist Addy Nicholson (19:45), 10th-place Eliana Beckham (20:36); 16th-place Sienna Smith (21:04) and 18th-place Morgan Beckwith (21:13).

"It was nice to win. Each girl stepped it up over the last 800 meters. They all did it. It was nice to see them respond. We raced against really good teams. Our times from two years ago were a big improvement. It was a good weekend with personal records."

Great Bend’s returning third-place 5A state medalist Kaiden Esfeld (15:43) finished runner-up behind Maize medalist Kaleb Glazier (15:39).

Great Bend’s boys runners also posted personal bests. Esfeld was followed by Tavon Stroup, 47th (18:28), Bradon Suppes, 43rd (18:36); Thomas Henrikson, 44th (18:38); Braylon Moore, 65th (19:12).

Wichita Trinity (40) placed first and Great Bend (180) placed seventh.

Great Bend will be the site of the 5A regional.

"It's the fourth year in a row well run on our home course. Kaiden will run regionals at home four years in a row."
