PARK CITY—Great Bend's No. 2 ranked Camdyn Post (34-9, 105) showed tenacity staying within 1-0 against Newton's state champion Brookelyn Treaster before losing 5-0 in the 5A state championship match. Post beat Basehor's No. 3 Miley Locke (0:36) in the semifinals.
The 105-pound Post, a standout competitor, was just shy of her ultimate goal.
"My goal was to be wrestling for a state championship," Post said. "The bigger picture is wanting to earn first place. My first three matches were really good. I didn't change anything. I focused on what I do best and kept going. It's tons of work to reach a state championship match. Every day, you practice or watch film of your previous matches."
Great Bend wrestling coach Rex Kern was proud of Post's effort.
"Camdyn wrestled really great, a super effort," Kern said. "Treaster hardly leaves any window of opportunity to score. Camydn tried a few new set-ups on her feet. She couldn't get her to hips on her shot attempts. Camdyn lost position one time. It's a heck of a season for Camdyn. She's got a path to be a 4-time state-time state placer."
No. 4 Kirra Stevens (33-12) pinned Shawnee Heights' Brooklyn Binkley (1:35) for fifth place.
Sophia Bauer (24-21, 100) placed sixth with a 20-9 loss to Goddard Eisenhower's Sadie Kuehn after pinning Kuehn in her second match.
Brooklynn Kelly (38-16, 130) battled through the consolation bracket and finished sixth with an 11-4 loss to Kansas City Washington's Reddi Johnson.
In the semifinals, Basehor's No. 1 ranked Lainie Galvan beat Bauer (0:49) and KC Piper's No. 2 ranked Malia Martin beat Stevens 18-8.
Six Panthers lost to state-ranked wrestlers in the first or second round.
Great Bend's girls placed ninth with 79 points. Wichita Kapaun-Mt. Carmel (157) captured the 5A team championship.
