Panthers' volleyball sweeps triangular

Great Bend’s volleyball team improved to 12-12 with a home sweep of 6A Emporia and Central Kansas League member Hillsboro Thursday.

The Panthers outlasted Emporia 25-16, 19-25, 25-22 in hard-fought three-set match and Hillsboro 25-22, 25-22. The Panthers compete Tuesday on the road against Smith Center and Phillipsburg.

Against Emporia (11-16), the Panthers received contributions from their varsity lineup of Sydney Unruh, Jayden Johnson, Alyssa Herter, Brynn Boxberger, Jenna Mauler, Kaylee Unruh, Rachel Panzer, Zoe Jerke and Olivia Mull. Mauler contributed key plays at the net.

"We did very well defending our home court," said Great Bend coach Shelly Duvall.

EMPORIA -- Mauler contributed in all areas with 11 digs, eight kills and serves received. Rachel Panzer led the attack with 11 kills and six serves received. Kaylee Unruh provided 11 serves received. Sydney Unruh contributed 13 digs and 20 serves received. Alyssa Herter had 16 assists and seven digs. Zoe Jerke had 14 assists.

HILLSBORO -- Mauler delivered n all-around performance wih 14 digs, 11 kills and eight serves received. Sydney Unruh led the defense with 12 digs and 14 serves received. Kaylee Unruh handled 10 serves. Olivia Mull provided seven kills. Rachel Panzer had seven kills. Alyssa Herter provided 17 assists. Zoe Jerke had nine assists.

The Panthers split a pair of matches Tuesday, beating Campus 25-21, 25-23, and losing a close match to Goddard Eisenhower 25-18, 23-25, 25-23.

Larned softball wins opener LARNED — Larned's softball team scored 39 runs to dominate the Ellis Railroaders 21-4 and 18-5 in Friday's doubleheader. LARNED 21, ELLIS 4 (G1) — Larned's Brooks Simmons tripled and drove home a trio of runs. Driving home a pair of runs were Eowyn Hedding, Maya Wilson, Teagan Walker, Jadyn Crosby and Jillian Hagerman. Hagerman and Karley Lemuz each doubled. Lemuz (2-0) pitched five innings to earn the victory. The Indians took advantage of nine walks, seven errors, six wild pitches and two hit batters. Ellis' Maleah Vine drove home two runs. Rylan Aschenbrenner had an RBI LARNED 18, ELLIS 5 (G2) — Larned's Hedding doubled and drove in three runs. Walker and Hagerman each drove in two runs. Driving home one run were Lemuz, Brooke Simmins, Crosby, Ivy Hope and Gillian Smith. Crosby (2-0) pitched five innings to earn the victory. Railroader Vine drove home two runs.
