MCPHERSON — A pair of hard-fought late-inning victories provide Great Bend's baseball team (9-3) with midseason momentum heading to Gardner and DeSoto this weekend.

The Panthers rallied past pesky Rose Hill 10-7 and held off perennial 4A state power McPherson 5-4 thanks to relief work by Koehn Ribordy and Jaxon Wondra.

PANTHERS 5, MCPHERSON 4 (G2) — Trenton Kern's 2-run fifth-inning homer off Takoda Linn gave the Panthers a 5-1 lead after Daxton Minton scored on Jaxon Wondra's single.

Carter Bengtson and Cowen Huggard delivered RBIs in a 2-run fifth inning for McPherson (12-4). Bengtson's double off Jaxon Wondra scored Asher Allen in the seventh inning.

But Wondra closed out a 5-strikeout save by retiring Huggard and Cade Strathman to end the game.

Strathman's single scored Bengtson in the first. Trenton Kern scored on a fourth-inning wild pitch and Rafael Chavez scored on Carter Dreiling's double.

PANTHERS 10, ROSE HILL (G1) — Eli Contreras ripped a 2-run homer to break a 7-7 tie in a 4-run sixth inning.

Minton's triple scored Gavin Wondra for a valuable insurance run. Trenton Kern scored on Keito Richter's groundout to start the 4-run inning.

Ribordy and Contreras each drove in three runs. Ribordy (2-1) earned the victory with three innings of relief work.

Rose Hill tagged Panther starter Chavez for five earned runs in 31/3 innings.
