Oilers singles, doubles qualify for 3-1A state

Central Plains Oiler Lauren Oeser (21-11) placed fourth and doubles team Grace Lamatsch/Ryann Metro (20-11) placed third at the Phillipsburg tennis regional to qualify for the state tournament at Topeka. .

PHILLIPSBURG — Central Plains Oiler Lauren Oeser (21-10) placed fourth and doubles team Grace Lamatsch/Ryann Metro (19-10) placed third to clinch spots in the 3-1A state tennis tournament at Topeka Oct. 13-14.

Trego’s Anna Malsam downed Oeser 6-3, 6-4 for third place after Oeser lost 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals to Phillipsburg runner-up Alivia Solida. Lamatsch/Metro defeated Colby’s Kennedy McCarty/Lexie Schroeder 6-0, 6-0 for third place after losing a tight semifinal match 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 (7-5) to Phillipsburg’s Jocelyn Billings/Isabella Keesee.

Lamatsch/Metro are 1-8 against 3-1A state qualifiers from Phillipsburg, Osborne, Conway Springs, Smoky Valley, Hesston and Ellsworth. 

Placing last year are Salina Sacred Heart runner-up Katherine Weiss (19-4), Larned’s Abigail Holt (26-4), fourth; Marysville’s Shea Kramer (29-4), fifth; Wichita Collegiate’s Lara De Carvalho (21-4), sixth; Oiler Oeser, eighth; Beloit’s Ashlyn Knight (17-5), 10th; and Cimarron’s Emily Goetz (25-5), 12th, 

Last year, Collegiate’s Laney Conrad/Julia Herman (26-3) placed first. Other returnees are Hesston’s fourth-place Elyse Griffin/Kori Kramer (23-4); sixth place Osborne’s Gracie Riner/Leavie Riner (23-1); and 11th-place Smoky Valley’s Lily Heline/Kayla Norberg (23-8). 

Two Hoisington entries missed the state tournament by one victory.

Hoisington’s doubles team Hailey Petersilie/Lauren Higgins (11-13) lost a tight 3-set consolation match for a state tournament berth. Phillipsburg’s Brown/Solida downed Petersilie/Higgins 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 for a berth to the state tournament.

Reese Merlau (11-15) nearly qualified for state, but lost 6-2, 7-5 to Colby’s Allison Zimmerman for a berth at the state tournament.

Larned softball wins opener LARNED — Larned's softball team scored 39 runs to dominate the Ellis Railroaders 21-4 and 18-5 in Friday's doubleheader. LARNED 21, ELLIS 4 (G1) — Larned's Brooks Simmons tripled and drove home a trio of runs. Driving home a pair of runs were Eowyn Hedding, Maya Wilson, Teagan Walker, Jadyn Crosby and Jillian Hagerman. Hagerman and Karley Lemuz each doubled. Lemuz (2-0) pitched five innings to earn the victory. The Indians took advantage of nine walks, seven errors, six wild pitches and two hit batters. Ellis' Maleah Vine drove home two runs. Rylan Aschenbrenner had an RBI LARNED 18, ELLIS 5 (G2) — Larned's Hedding doubled and drove in three runs. Walker and Hagerman each drove in two runs. Driving home one run were Lemuz, Brooke Simmins, Crosby, Ivy Hope and Gillian Smith. Crosby (2-0) pitched five innings to earn the victory. Railroader Vine drove home two runs.
