DODGE CITY — The Great Bend High School track and field team competed at the Western Athletic Conference meet on Thursday at Dodge City.
The Panthers scored 43 points, falling 4.5 points behind Garden City to finish in fifth place.
The Lady Panthers managed nine points for fifth place.
Now Great Bend head coach Todd Kaiser said he is focusing on the upcoming Class 5A regional meet, which will be held on Friday in Salina.
“I have a feeling that we’re going to be able to do well at the regional meet,” Kaiser said. “WAC is so tough this year. Garden (City), Hays and Liberal all have good teams this year.
“Our regional is stacked, but I’m pleased with where we’re at. We just need a good week of practice.”
Great Bend came away with two individual WAC champions.
Jayce Brack claimed titles in both the shot put (58-8.25) and the discus (162-11).
Selam Ball won the pole vault title, reaching a height of 10-7.
Great Bend had nine athletes claim All-WAC honors, including Brack and Ball.
Antonio Carrasco finished in third in the 400-meter dash (51.40).
Christian Graham placed second in the 3,200 run (10:11.14).
Nick Warren finished in third place in the discus (144-3).
Great Bend’s boy 4x800 relay team, consisting of Cristian Garcia, Mason YellowWolf, Michael Prieto and Eric Vazquez, finished in third place at 8:32.73.
“It was nice to see our 4x800 relay team finish in third place,” Kaiser said. “Whoever finished in the top 3 is considered All-WAC. We had two WAC champions in Jayce and Selam, they both did excellent.
“Antonio Carrasco did great, and he should be in a good shape in the upcoming regional meet.”
