HOISINGTON — The Great Bend High School wrestling team won the Hoisington Cardinal Corner Classic on Friday night at the Hoisington Activity Center.
The Panthers finished with 245.5 points, topping second place Wichita North, which finished at 154.5.
Hoisington claimed third place at 137.5, and Larned took seventh place with 46 points.
Great Bend dominated the tournament, taking first place in seven of the 14 weight classes and second place in five others.
“I thought we wrestled really well,” Great Bend head coach Norbert Muth said. “I thought the kids we bumped up (a weight class), the same ones from (the dual against Dodge City), they really paid off. We got an extra guy in the lineup in Bryce Lytle, and he placed first. A lot of those guys placed first. They did really well.”
The first-place finishers were Eric Vazquez (106-pound), Ryan DesLauriers (113), Keaton Sander (120), Bryce Lytle (126), Zack Schridde (145), Kade Sander (152) and Joe Lindenberger (170).
The Panthers combined for 34 pins in 54 matches in the tournament.
“We had a good week,” Muth said. “That’s what I like about the Hoisington tournament. It’s close to home. We get to wrestle on Friday and not on Saturday, which isn’t something we normally get.
“Each kid gets at least three matches, but most of them get four or even five. That’s a good thing, especially heading into the break.”
Great Bend returns from the holiday break on Jan. 10 for the Derby tournament.
“It gives these kids some confidence heading into the holidays,” Muth said. “You can’t just go to tournaments where they get roughed up on each match. Confidence is an important thing in wrestling.
“We’re going to Derby once we get back from break, which is always a tough, two-day tournament.

Hoisington places third
at own classic
Hoisington got three first-place performances on Friday night.
Brandon Ball (132), Johnathan Ball (138) and Kagan Blackwell (220) each won their respective weight classes.
“I was exceptionally pleased with Kagan Blackwell,” Hoisington head coach Dan Schmidt said. “He’s been in the background of some really good kids. It’s easy to focus on the Balls boys because they’re just so good and easy to follow, but Kagan hasn’t lost many matches at the JV level for us. It’s nice to see him get a chance on varsity. He’s worked real hard for it.”
Brandon Ball is ranked No. 1 in his weight class in Class 3-1A on the latest Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association poll. Johnathan Ball is ranked No. 6 in his class.
“The Balls, they’re just special,” Schmidt said. “They’re hard workers in the wrestling room. They’re fun to watch.”
Senior Avery Urban finished second in the 195 weight class, a class that had four state-ranked athletes in it — Urban (No. 2 in 3-1A), AJ Cooper of Cimarron (No. 4 in 3-1A), Justin Henry of Great Bend (No. 4 in 5A) and Caleb Franklin of Wichita North (No. 4 in 6A).
“I was awful proud of Avery,” Schmidt said. “I don’t think people realize how difficult the 195 class was on Friday. It was basically the who’s who of ranked kids in a bunch of classes. There were four ranked kids in there, and they all wrestled real well.”

Reed leads Larned
at Hoisington
Kaiden Reed finished third in the 285 weight class, leading the Larned Indians on Friday night.
Reed won three of his five matches.
Larned also had four fourth-place finishes — Marcus Nolde (113), Jalen Kraisinger (126), Dalton Barker (132) and Seth Hutchins (220).
