LARNED — The Ellinwood boys used hot 3-point shooting to race to a 26-20 halftime advantage and upset Larned 56-46 in the Gene Keady Basketball Classic.
The Eagles buried 6-of-11 three-point attempts the first half with Tyson Martinez hitting three attempts. Larned struggled with Ellinwood’s zone defense. After third quarters, Ellinwood extended the lead to 43-28.
Behind full-court pressure defense, Larned rallied within 43-39 with three minutes left when Ellinwood iced the victory with free throws.
Ellinwood’s Joel Kasselman continually got loose along the baseline for close-in baskets and drained a 3-pointer. He led both teams in rebounding and scoring.
Larned coach Jerrod Smith bemoaned the second and third quarters
“We seem to have times that we lose our intensity, our focus, and turn the ball over too much and miss open shots,” he said. “ In several games, we’ve had scoring droughts that seals our fate.”
Larned committed 16 turnovers. Ellinwood gave the ball away six times keyed by guards Tyson Martinez and Zack Jacobs.
Kasselman scored 18 points. Martinez had 12 on four 3-pointers, Myles Menges contributed 10 and Jacobs 9.
Larned’s Jonathan Herter (11), Nick Orth (11) and Mason Schartz (10) scored in double figures and Dalton Bright chipped in eight points.
Ellinwood plays Kiowa County for fifth place. Larned meets Kinsley Saturday in the seventh-place game.
