The Great Bend High School boys’ golf team hosted an invitational on Monday at the Club at StoneRidge.
The Panthers edged Liberal by one stroke to finish in fourth place at 358.
Hays won the invite at 318 strokes.
Dodge City placed second (330) and Garden City placed third (333).
“I don’t think there’s anybody that thought they’d played as well as they could today, which usually happens in golf,” GBHS head coach Troy Stein said. “The scores aren’t really close to what we should be able to do.”
While Stein suggested it may have been home-team jitters, it wasn’t the weather.
“It was a good day for golf,” Stein said. “Temperature-wise, it was just about perfect. Little-to-no wind. We don’t get many days like that in the spring. We didn’t play as well as we’d like to, obviously.
“Sometimes that happens. Sometimes, you get a little pressure and you don’t play as well as you liked.”
Great Bend’s top finisher, Chance Haney, tied for ninth place, carding an 84, but dropped to 11th in the tiebreaker.
“He started off the season kind of slow, the first couple meets,” Stein said of Hejny. “Since then, he’s kind of led the way for us, which is what we expect from a senior.”
Cole Mulch was Great Bend’s No. 2, shooting an 87.
“Hejny and Mulch have been coming in at No. 1 and No. 2 all year,” Stein said. “That’s what we expect. They’re the leaders of the team. Then Raef (Rein) and Kory (Walters) have been coming in right behind them. We need to get some good scores from them to compete.”
Rein hit a 91 on the day, Chris Seidel finished at 96, and Jacob Wharton and Walters each carded a 103.
