VALLEY CENTER — The Great Bend wrestling team placed third with a 4-1 dual record, losing to Valley Center 43-25.
Panthers Conrad Montoya (132), two-time state place-winner Keaton Sander (138) and Noal Presson (285) all finished with 5-0 records. Jeff Spragis (152) finished 4-1.
“The dual we lost to Valley Center (43-25), had two matches that could have easily gone the other way,” said Great Bend coach Nathan Broeckelman. “Our wrestlers competed tough and did not back down from anyone. I’m looking forward to the next few weeks to see where we sit before Christmas.
“I was extremely pleased with how our varsity stepped up this first tournament. This tournament is a great week, a good test to see how well our first two and a half weeks of practice have gone. Our young guys performed well and got their name out for others to notice.”

The Panther JV wrestlers saw 18 of 20 wrestlers place in the top five of their weight divisions.
“It‘s always a great day when you bring home medals from 90 percent of your wrestlers,” Broeckelman said. “They gained mat-time as we have a lot of first-year wrestlers. We hope to carry that momentum into our home junior varsity meet this weekend.”
