HAYS — It was Great Bend High School’s final cross-country meet before the Class 5A Regional meet at Barton Lake on Saturday, Oct. 25.
The Western Athletic Conference meet in Hays was a bit of a struggle for both the boys and girls teams.
Both teams finished in fifth place. The Lady Panthers had 98 points, seven points behind fourth-place Hays.
The Panthers finished with 97 points, nine points behind fourth-place Hays.
Dodge City won the girls’ race, and Garden City won the boys’ race.
“We really didn’t do well at the meet,” GBHS head coach Todd Kaiser said. “We went in focusing on matching up with Liberal and they did that. It wasn’t because of lack of effort. They gave it all and left it on the course.
“We just focused on going after Liberal because they’re in our regional, and Hays and some of the other runners crept up on us.”
Both the boys, freshmen Kerby Depenbusch led all Great Bend runners with second-place finish.
He turned in a time of 16:28 and earned a spot on the All-WAC first team.
Eric Vazquez was the Panthers’ No. 2 runner, placing 18th at 18:05.
On the girls’ side, Great Bend’s Mary Williams placed eighth overall with a time of 17:14. The finish gave her All-WAC Honorable Mention honors.
Karen Razo missed the Top 10 cut for All-WAC by one runner. She finished 11th at 17:20.
“Kerby and Mary were both All-WAC,” Kaiser said. “Kerby was first team and Mary was honorable mention. It was a good outing for them.”
