HUTCHINSON — The Great Bend High School swim team to first place for the first time this season, winning the Hutchinson meet on Tuesday night.
The Panthers finished with 386 points, putting them ahead of Hutch, which finished with 346.
GBHS head coach Steve Beaumont said that he was pleased with the progression of his team thus far.
“It is a good way to finish the pre-Christmas portion of our schedule,” Beaumont said. “We have definitely improved each meet, which is what we talk about and what we really want to do.
“We had some good times, but there are still some things that we need to improve on.”
Beaumont also said that he is still looking for the right events for swimmers.
“You know, we’re still moving some kids around,” Beaumont said. “We’re still trying to figure out where to put our kids where they will be best able to help the team. We were able to bring everybody to this event. We didn’t leave anyone at home sick, so that was nice.”
The Panthers were led by Michael Haines, who took first place in a pair of distance events. He finished with a time of two minutes, 20.92 seconds in the 200-yard individual medley and 5:46.59 in the 500 freestyle.
“He swam two difficult races for us,” Beaumont said of Haines. “It was a fast meet, and there wasn’t a lot of rest time between events, so he did a very good job swimming a couple of the distance events for us.
“His 200 I.M. was within a second or two of his best time, and he knocked off his best time in the 500 free.”
Dylan Dreiling finished in second place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.31. He also touched in at 1:12.98 in the 100 butterfly to finish in third place.
“Dylan Dreiling swam the 100 fly for the first time on Tuesday, and he did very well,” Beaumont said. “He really stood out in the meet. He did a very good job.”
GBHS is off until Jan. 11 when they travel to Manhattan.
“We have a good break in there to put in some yards,” Beaumont said.
