SALINA — The Great Bend High School boys’ track and field team tied for third place at a Class 5A Regional Meet on Friday.
The Panthers finished with 76 points, tying Newton. Hays won the boys’ competition with 123.67 points, and Maize South placed second at 77.
“I thought it turned out really well,” GBHS head coach Todd Kaiser said. “We got everyone qualified for state that we thought we’d get in. We also had some pleasant surprises.
“The boys have come together really well. We had a number of boys put up points, and hopefully, we can put points on the board at state.”
The Lady Panthers finished in fifth place at 55 points. Maize South won the girls’ competition with a score of 120.5.
“On the girls’ side, we benefited from having the Dolls jumping with us,” Kaiser said. “They were able to get some points on the board for us. Shelby Tracy winning the long jump was a nice surprise, and we have Selam Ball in the pole vault.
“Given the conditions that we were competing in, we were getting rained on the entire time, we did very well.”
Jayce Brack won a regional title with a throw of 51-8.25. Brack also qualified for the 5A State Meet in the discus with a second-place throw of 151-10.
“Jayce’s throw was only 51 feet, but (assistant coach Cliff Burt) only wanted him to throw far enough to qualify,” Kaiser said. “We didn’t want to risk an injury or anything once he qualified.”
Selam Ball claimed the regional title in the pole vault, clearing 11-0.
“Selam, going 11 feet in those conditions,” Kaiser said. “When everything is rainy, there is obvious concern for safety. She did an excellent job, and it was pretty lucky no one got hurt.”
Shelby Tracy won the long jump. She reached a distance of 15-9.75.
“That was a pleasant surprise,” Kaiser said of Tracy winning the long jump. “She made tremendous improvements all season.”
