Great Bend finishes 3rd in WAC Tournament

Great Bend finished third in the Western Athletic Conference volleyball tournament at Great Bend. Garden City (5-0) and Hays High (4-1) finished first and second, and the Indians pushed the Indians to three sets.  
Great Bend will host their Senior Night Tuesday in at Great Bend High School against Hoisington. Matches start at 5 and 6 p.m. The Panthers will compete at Class 5A substate Saturday at Goddard Eisenhower and will likely be the No. 4 seed.
Great Bend defeated Dodge City, 22-25, 25-20 and 25-23 in a competitive first match.

“We started pretty slow, but got things going in the second set,” said Great Bend coach Kelsey Perry. “There is a lot of anticipation in a big tournament so once we settled down we were fine.”
Great Bend defeated Liberal, 25-24, 25-16.
“We struggled again to get off to a good start against the Redskins,” Perry said. “The key for us this match was winning the hustle plays. We got our serving under control and starting winning rallies which allowed us to take control.”
Great Bend lost to Garden City, 25-18, 25-23.

“Garden has a big front row and that made us alter some attacks,” Perry said. “We couldn’t find holes against them and struggled to win rallies. Against good teams like them you can’t make many mistakes and we simply made too many to beat them.”

Great Bend lost to Hays 22-25, 25-10, 26-24. The Panthers won the first set and pushed the Indians in the decisive third set.

“We ran out of gas against Hays and tried to play not to lose instead of trying to win,” Perry said. “They are a great team and won some really long rallies to gain momentum we they needed it.
