Great Bend's Welsch earns KCAC honor

LINDSBORG — Bethany College’s Lauren Welsch of Great Bend earned the KCAC Women’s Basketball Offensive Player of the Week. Welsch scored a career high 33 points in the Swedes’ 75-72 loss to No. 21 Friends. Welsch recorded back-to-back double-doubles with 33 points, 10 rebounds against Friends, and 15 points and 11 rebounds against the Ottawa Braves in a 60-58 overtime victory. The sophomore combined for four assists, two blocks, and two steals in the two games.

HAYS — Sylvan Grove’s Legion baseball team rallied for a 5-4 victory over Ellinwood on Colin Obermueller’s game-winning single in Wednesday’s AA Russell Zone baseball tournament. The game was moved to Hays from Russell because of a unplayable field.Ellinwood (9-10) plays Thursday against the Marysville-Smith Center loser.Ellinwood led 4-1 after 41/2 innings. Sylvan Grove led 1-0 when Dylan Fry scored a first-inning run.Ellinwood’s Levi Swenson scored a second-inning run on a double steal with Evan Johanning.
