Greg Burley lands first-team All-WAC honor

Sophomore Greg Burley, a 132-pounder from Great Bend High School, has been named as a first-team selection for the All-Western Athletic Conference wrestling team.
Chris Burley (120), Ryan DesLauriers (106), Brodie Bretz (138) and Ramon Garcia (195) of GBHS were named as honorable mention selections.
Greg Burley was a third-place finisher for the Panthers at the Class 5A state tournament at Hartman Arena in Park City in February. He took a 19-2 record and regional championship to state meet after being ranked No. 6 in the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association poll. He was a sixth-place finisher at the state meet last year.
Junior Chris Burley, who won the state title at 112 pounds as a sophomore, would have been a first-team All-WAC selection had it not been for Garden City’s Anthony Calderon, a 2011 6A state champion, who took third place last month.
Chris Burley, who had a 31-4 record entering the state meet, was a regional runner-up and state runner-up. Ranked No. 2 entering the state meet, he lost to top-ranked freshman Isaac Dulgarian of St. Thomas Aquinas in the state championship.
DesLauriers, a sophomore, was a state qualifier for the second straight season, while Bretz, a senior, was a first-time qualifier. Garcia, a senior, was hampered with a late-season shoulder injury, which curtailed his postseason.
